Sprawling across the untamed heart of southern Tanzania, Nyerere National Park (formerly part of the Selous Game Reserve) is one of Africa’s most pristine and diverse safari destinations. This vast sanctuary is a symphony of ecosystems—towering baobabs, golden savannahs, Miombo woodlands, swaying palms, lush swamps, and shimmering lakes—all stitched together by the majestic Rufiji River.
A Sanctuary of Life.
Nyerere is a haven for wildlife in both staggering numbers and dazzling variety. Near the water, flashes of color from over 440 species of birds fill the sky, while crocodiles glide silently through the shallows and hippos grunt from the riverbanks. On land, you’ll encounter Tanzania’s iconic safari residents—elephants, giraffes, zebras, kudu, impalas, buffalo, warthogs, and baboons.
This park is home to some of the largest populations of elephants, buffalo, and lions in Africa. It also shelters elusive predators like leopards, hyenas, and the rare and endangered African wild dog—a thrilling sight for any wildlife lover.
The Rufiji River, with its labyrinth of channels, lakes, and oxbow bends, is the park’s lifeline—especially in the dry season when wildlife congregates in extraordinary numbers near its nourishing waters. It flows all the way to the Indian Ocean, carving its path through the breathtaking Stiegler’s Gorge, a dramatic chasm 100 meters deep and wide.
