Description

Often referred to as the “Little Serengeti,” Mikumi National Park offers an enchanting blend of wide-open landscapes, rich wildlife, and a peaceful atmosphere that makes it perfect for a classic African safari — without the crowds. Stretching across a scenic plain, Mikumi’s terrain is strikingly similar to its famous northern cousin, with golden grasses that dance in the breeze and scattered acacias standing like sentinels of the wild.
The main road that cuts through the park divides it into two distinct worlds: To the northwest, you’ll find a beautiful savannah punctuated by baobabs, tamarinds, and even a rare palm — a haven for grazing animals and the predators that trail them. As you venture farther from the road, the dramatic rock formations of the Rubeho and Uluguru Mountains rise in the distance, adding a majestic backdrop to the wildlife sightings. The southeastern side is wilder and less explored, offering a quieter, more remote experience for those craving solitude and untamed nature.

Safari Adventures Await.

Nestled between the Uluguru Mountains to the northeast and the Rubeho and Udzungwa ranges to the southwest, Mikumi shares its borders with the legendary Selous Game Reserve — Africa’s largest. Here, the wildlife thrives. The Mkata Floodplains are a particular highlight, drawing herds of elephants and buffalo to their nutrient-rich grasses. It’s not uncommon to spot giraffes nibbling treetops, lions lounging in the shade, or zebras and wildebeest migrating across the open plain.

Explore on Foot or by Jeep.

Whether you prefer the thrill of a classic jeep safari or the intimacy of a walking safari, Mikumi delivers. Venture into the bush with an experienced guide and discover the smaller wonders of the park — from colorful birds to ancient animal tracks. For an extended adventure, combine your visit with a hike in the nearby Udzungwa Mountains, known for their waterfalls and endemic species.

Wildlife Encounters.

Mikumi is a wildlife enthusiast’s dream. From the famed Big Five to countless birds and reptiles, the park is alive with activity. Keep your eyes peeled for leopards lounging in trees, crocodiles sunning on riverbanks, and migratory birds that fill the sky with color and sound. And best of all, wildlife sightings often begin the moment you enter the park — a thrilling welcome to the wilderness.
A Perfect Stop on the Southern Safari Circuit.
Ideally located along the route to Ruaha National Park and the Selous Game Reserve, Mikumi is more than just a stopover — it’s a destination in its own right. With breathtaking landscapes and abundant wildlife, it offers a perfect introduction to Tanzania’s southern circuit, inviting you to pause, explore, and fall in love with the wild
